Abstract
Veratrum patulum mistaken for Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum MAKINO may cause gastrointestinal symptom, arrhythmia, hypotension and the teratogenic effect. Veratrum patulum has a ester-alkaloid (protoveratrine) that provokes cardiac arrhythmias by excessive vagal stimulation and depression of the sinoauricular and atrioventricular nodes of the heart. We experienced five cases of successful outcome in patients with Veratrum patulum poisoning through active treatment from the early phase after ingestion. In one case, ventricular tachycardia occurred and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was carried out. The other cases were kept under observation and generally recovered with supportive care. We report five cases of Veratrum patulum poisoning with review of literature.(Korean J Med 70:S212-S215, 2006) Key Words : Veratrum, Protoveratrine, Tachycardia, Ventricular
