Abstract
The small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma which happens in the colon is a rare primary epithelial malignancy and is a histologically similiar tumor to a small cell carcinoma of lungs. The reported incidence of this tumor represents between 0.1 percent and 3.9 percent of all colorectal malignancies. This small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma is officially called neuroendocrine carcinoma, stem cell carcinoma, or small cell undifferentiated carcinoma. The outbreak of small cell neuroendocrine carcinomas happens in their 50's and 60's when it is diagnosed. Small cell carcinoma in the colon has early metastasis and so the prognosis is extremely poor. Authors report a rare case of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in orifice of appendix.(Korean J Med 70:S313-S318, 2006) Key Words : Carcinoma, Small cell, Appendix
