Abstract |
Basaloid-squamous cell carcinoma (BSC), a high-grade variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), occurs predominantly in the upper aerodigestive tract, although it can occur in various organs, including the breast, uterine cervix, and anus. It is extremely rare in the esophagus, but it must be distinguished from other malignancies because of its poor degree of differentiation, high proliferation activity, and high incidence of distant metastasis. Localized esophageal BSC is treated surgically and the median survival time is similar to that of esophageal SCC. For patients with distant metastasis, no standard treatment has been established because of the limited number of cases of the disease. Here, we report a case of esophageal BSC with liver metastases that was treated successfully with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). |
