Abstract |
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the colon is an extremely rare neoplasm. Clinical presentation is similar to colon adenocarcinoma, and surgery is the most effective therapy. We report a case of primary SCC of the sigmoid colon in a 68-year-old woman. She presented with lower abdominal pain and constipation. Colonoscopy demonstrated a circumferential ulceroinfiltrating mass in the sigmoid colon. The biopsied specimen showed scattered dyskeratotic tumor cells with necrotic and keratotic debris at the surface. Computed tomography (CT) revealed wall thickening of the sigmoid colon, with invasion into surrounding tissues. Spontaneous perforation of the tumor developed 9 days after admission, and an emergency palliative operation was performed. Adjuvant chemoradiotherapy was not possible due to the patient’s poor general condition. While there have been many advances in multimodality therapy for colonic SCC, therapy selection is still restricted due to late detection of already advanced cancer. Early detection is the key to treatment. |
