| Abstract |
|
Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is an uncommon chronic B-cell lymphoproliferative disease characterized by splenomegaly, cytopenia, and circulating lymphocytes with cytoplasmic projections. We describe a case of hairy cell leukemia that developed in a 47-year-old woman who visited this hospital for abdominal discomfort secondary to huge splenomegaly. A complete blood count performed at initial examination revealed pancytopenia, and peripheral blood smear showed typical hairy cells with cytoplasmic projections. Bone marrow aspiration yielded dry tap twice, and bone marrow biopsy, including touch imprint, revealed abnormal “fried-egg” cells and myelofibrosis. The hairy cells stained positive for tartrate-resistant acid phosphate. On immunophenotyping, leukemic cells were positive for CD19, CD20, CD25, and CD79a, findings suggestive of B-cell origin. A course of chemotherapy using 2-chlorodeoxyadenosine achieved complete remission, as demonstrated on bone marrow examination. |
