Abstract |
Actinomycosis is an uncommon chronic infection in which primary liver involvement accounts for 5% of all
actinomycotic infections. The presence of a long-standing intrauterine device (IUD) is a well-known risk factor for this
infection in women. Hepatic actinomycosis can closely mimic a malignant tumor on clinical and radiological examination.
A 46-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with right upper quadrant pain and fever for 4 weeks. Abdominal
computed tomography revealed a 7¡¿7 cm hepatic mass with invasion into the rectus abdominis muscle beyond Glisson's
capsule. An ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology sample showed numerous long filamentous bacilli.
Here we report a case of primary hepatic actinomycosis, emphasizing the role of abdominal computed tomography
followed by FNA, in a condition that frequently requires liver biopsy for diagnosis.(Korean J Med 73:S876-S879, 2007) |
