Abstract |
Compartment syndromes are due to increased tissue pressure within a closed muscle compartment that compromises the local circulation and neuromuscular function. The syndrome can be induced by limb trauma, drug and alcohol abuse, limb surgery, and limb ischemia. Recognition of this syndrome is important to avoid significant or total loss of neuromuscular function in the affected limb. Consequently, patients with an acute compartment syndrome may require an urgent fasciotomy to alleviate the neurovascular symptoms.
We present the case of a 66-year-old male with a long-standing history of type 2 diabetes who presented with a painful left lower extremity after needle acupuncture and was diagnosed with acute compartment syndrome. A single fasciotomy with hematoma evacuation released the pressure and improved the pain with no morbidity.
Needle acupuncture should be performed carefully in immunocompromised subjects, such as those with long-standing diabetes. (Korean J Med 75:S862-S865, 2008) |
