Abstract
An obturator hernia is a rare type of hernia that is difficult to detect early because of its non-specific symptoms. A delayed diagnosis can lead to mortality. A very thin 79-year-old women visited hospital complaining of pain in the thigh and pelvis. She was discharged because the symptoms improved. One day later, she was readmitted with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. The abdominal plain X-ray showed evidence of small bowel obstruction. She was managed conservatively due to her poor general condition, but the symptoms did not resolve. Three days later after admission, the hernia was diagnosed on abdominal computed tomography (CT) and she underwent immediate surgery. We report the symptoms and early diagnosis methods for obturator hernias with a brief review of the literature. (Korean J Med 75:S762-S766, 2008)
