Abstract |
Hepatosplenic candidiasis is a form of disseminated fungal infection mainly involving the liver, spleen, and occasionally the kidneys. Because most patients are in remission at the time of diagnosis of hepatosplenic candidiasis, the usual dilemma is whether to delay further chemotherapy or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, or to hold further treatment until the infection is completely eradicated. We report a 37-year-old man with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) who developed hepatosplenic candidiasis after reinduction chemotherapy. Moreover, he was not in complete remission at that time of infection. He was supposed to receive an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation simultaneously with amphotericin B prophylaxis. Due to intensive supportive care and infection control with anti-fungal prophylaxis, he successfully completed the transplant procedure without reactivation of hepatosplenic candidiasis. |
