Abstract |
Malaria is a protozoan disease that's transmitted by the bite of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. During malarial
infection, altered splenic structure and function can produce splenic complications such as hematoma formation, rupture,
hypersplenism and infarction. Splenic infarction is a rare complication and it is probably underdiagnosed. In Korea,
Plasmodium vivax is the most frequent malarial infection. We described here the case of a 48-year-old male who had
acute Plasmodium vivax malaria complicated with splenic infarction. Management was restricted to anti-malarial
medication and analgesia. The clinical outcome was favorable in this case. Clinicians should be aware that left
hypochondrial pain in acute malaria patients may be due to splenic infarction. It is noteworthy that this is the first report
about splenic infarction by Plasmodium vivax malaria.(Korean J Med 73:S1061-S1065, 2007) |
