Abstract
An inflammatory fibroid polyp is a pseudotumorous lesion in gastrointestinal tract, first described in 1949. The histologic feature is characterized by a localized proliferation of fibrous tissue and blood vessels with inflammatory reactions, and these may lead to various symptoms including epigastric pain, intestinal obstruction by intussusception and intestinal bleeding depending on the site of invasion. Recently, inflammatory fibroid polyps have been detected more frequently as the use of endoscopy is increased. It's mostly commonly found in the gastric antrum and the esophagus is a very rare site (No case of esophageal inflammatory fibroid polyp is reported in Korea). We report a 62 year old male case of inflammatory fibroid polyp , which was initially thought to be an esophageal submucosal tumor with malignant transformation, but later pathologically confirmed as an esophageal fibroid polyp via thoracotomy.(Korean J Med 70:S128-S131, 2006) Key Words : Inflammatory polyp, Esophagus, Submucosal tumor
