- Abstract
- Heterotopic gastric mucosa in the esophagus is a discrete area of gastric mucosa that is usually found in the upper esophagus. The endoscopic prevalence of heterotopic gastric mucosa varies from 0.1 to 10%. It is usually asymptomatic and has no clinical significance. In a minority of cases, however, it is associated with dysphagia, odynophagia, cough, globus sense, ulcer, bleeding, and stricture. Although it is not a premalignant lesion, 30 cases of adenocarcinoma arising from heterotopic gastric mucosa in the cervical esophagus have been reported worldwide. We report a case of upper esophageal adenocarcinoma arising in heterotopic gastric mucosa that was treated by endoscopic mucosal resection. (Korean J Med 75:S773-S778, 2008)
