Abstract
Concurrent gastric neuroendocrine carcinoma and adenocarcinoma is very rare and usually is diagnosed at postoperative state because gross differentiation of the mixture of two tumors is difficult. We experienced a case in which the tumor seemed to be gastric cancer on gastroduodenoscopy and was diagnosed as undifferentiated adenocarcinoma by endoscopic biopsy. However, postoperatively it was revealed as adenocarcinoma mixed with collision and composite types of neuroendocrine tumors based on histologic examination and immunohistochemistry. The prognosis of concurrent gastric neuroendocrine carcinoma and adenocarcinoma is determined by malignant potential of the larger portion of tumor. Generally prognosis of neuroendocrine tumor is better than that of the gastric adenocarcinoma. However, as in our case, if the poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma occupies the large portion of the tumor, the prognosis is poorer than that of solitary gastric adenocarcinoma. Therefore, it may be needed closer postoperative follow up.
