Abstract
Argyria is a rare cause of cutaneous discoloration due to silver deposition. Occupational and iatrogenic argyria are now very rare, and the use of dietary supplements is now the primary cause of argyria. Chronic ingestion of silver preparations can lead to silver deposition in the skin. We report a case of argyria induced by the chronic ingestion of colloidal silver in a 70-year-old woman. She visited our clinic complaining of chronic fatigue and facial discoloration. Clinical examination showed a slate-gray hyperpigmentation of the skin, particularly in the face. A skin biopsy was taken from the forehead. Pathologic examination showed deposition of brown-black granules along the basement membranes of vasculature and hair follicles in the dermis. This report demonstrates the potential toxicity of colloidal silver found in dietary supplements.(Korean J Med 73:S1017-S1021, 2007)
