- Abstract
- Arthralgia is minor side effect of antithyroid medications. The development of arthralgia should prompt immediate
drug discontinuation, since this symptom may be a harbinger of a severe transient migratory polyarthritis known as the
antithyroid arthritis syndrome. The antithyroid arthritis syndrome is not common and its pathogenesis is unknown. There
has been no report of a case in Korea to date. We treated a case of antithyroid arthritis syndrome in a 61-year-old
woman with Graves' disease who was referred for polyarthritis that was reported to start 10 days after prophylthiouracil
(PTU) 300 mg was prescribed for treatment. One week after discontinuation of the PTU, the symptoms improved and
methimazole 20 mg per day was prescribed instead. However, 3 days after administration, the symptoms and laboratory
findings were aggravated. The methimazole was discontinued and the clinical manifestations improved. This is the first
report of the antithyroid arthritis syndrome in Korea.(Korean J Med 73:S985-S988, 2007)
