Abstract |
We present a case of Wernicke-Korsak off encephalopathy due to prolonged vomiting and unbalanced nutrition in a patient with
schizophrenia and esophageal and gastric cancer. The patient’s psychiatric illness and cancer treatment led to either psychiatric deterioration
or brain metastasis, which delayed thiamine treatment. Owing to its high mortality and morbidity, Wernicke encephalopathy
should be considered in any patient with confusion, gait disturbance, and nystagmus, especially if associated with malnutrition.
This is particularly important in a patient with psychiatric illness or cancer in which the clinical history and symptoms may be similar
and treatment may be delayed. (Korean J Med 77:S1289-S1292, 2009) |
