Abstract |
Ascaris lumbricoides is one of the most common intestinal parasites. Although biliary ascariasis is rare in Korea, a feared complication of ascariasis is migration into the biliary tree causing cholangitis, biliary stones, cholecystitis, and pancreatitis. We report a 52-year-old man who was admitted with repetitive epigastric pain. He was misdiagnosed with biliary ascariasis due to Taenia solium based on his presenting illness and a trapezoid-shaped head seen in the bile duct on abdomen ultrasonography before endoscopy. Consequently, we treated the patient with praziquantel and planned to perform endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). However, the patient complained of no further epigastric pain after admission. We postulated that the parasite had left the biliary tract, and extracted a live Ascaris lumbricoides with forceps at endoscopy. We report this case with a review of the relevant literature. |
