Abstract
Epithelial gastric polyps can be categorized as either hyperplastic or adenomatous. Hyperplastic polyps are predominant and account for 85~91% of gastric polyps. In contrast to adenomatous polyps, hyperplastic polyps generally do not transform into a cancer, although hyperplastic polyps are occasionally associated with gastric cancer. The malignant transformation of a hyperplastic polyp is related to its size and macroscopic type, and most adenocarcinomas found within hyperplastic polyps are the well differentiated type. Few cases of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma occurring in gastric hyperplastic polyps have been reported. We report a rare case of a 0.6-cm sized poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma arising in a hyperplastic polyp on the anterior wall of the distal body of the stomach, with a brief review of the literature.
Key Words: Hyperplastic polyp; Adenocarcinoma; Endoscopic mucosal resection
