Abstract |
A cough is the most common symptom of respiratory disease. There are various complications of coughs, such as rib fractures, hernia of the lung, pneumo-pericardium, rectus sheath hematoma, diaphragmatic rupture, hemoptysis, internal carotid artery dissection, and laceration of the stomach and spleen. An abdominal wall defect or hematoma due to a cough is rare, and may sometimes need surgical treatment. It may be misdiagnosed as an acute abdomen, acute appendicitis, or obstetrical disease. Radiologic modalities, such as computed tomography (CT), can be essential for a correct diagnosis. We report a case of abdominal subcutaneous hematoma induced by vigorous coughing in a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patient. (Korean J Med 75:S948-S951, 2008) |
