Abstract
Microbiological confirmation is the gold standard method for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB), but there are numerous reports of false-positive cultures for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Although the prevalence of TB in Korea is still high, the occurrence of false-positive cultures for M. tuberculosis has rarely been recognized or reported. We report a false-positive culture of multidrug-resistant M. tuberculosis due to cross-contamination, as confirmed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. Clinicians should always suspect the possibility of a false-positive culture result for M. tuberculosis when there is a discrepancy between the clinical and bacteriological results, with low colony counts on sputum culture for M. tuberculosis.
Key Words: Mycobacterium tuberculosis; False-positive culture; Crossover contamination; RFLP analysis
