Abstract
We report a case of primary hepatic neuroendocrine carcinoma in a 74-year-old woman. The patient had a large mass measuring 10 cm in its greatest diameter in the liver. The preoperative biopsy diagnosis was a poorly differentiated cholangiocarcinoma, but the final diagnosis was a primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the liver. Microscopically, the tumor cells showed small oval-shaped nuclei with a trabecular arrangement and rosette-like features. In the immunohistochemical staining, the tumor cells showed positive immunoreactivity for chromogranin A and synaptophysin. The patient also had metastases in the gallbladder and in one pericholedochal lymph node. The systemic evaluation did not reveal any other primary lesion of neuroendocrine carcinoma. After 3 months of follow-up, there was no evidence of recurrence or metastasis in the radiologic examination.(Korean J Med 73:S935-S940, 2007)
