Abstract |
Foreign body aspiration is uncommon in adults, but can occur accidentally during surgical and dental procedures.
Psychotic patients can occasionally aspirate dangerous foreign bodies. We experienced a schizophrenic patient that had a bronchial obstruction after swallowing cylindrical batteries.
A 40 year old man was admitted for dyspnea from swallowing three batteries 3 days prior to admission. In the past, that patient had been diagnosed as having schizophrenia and had been treated in the psychological clinic. A chest X-ray showed radiopaque bar-shaped material in the lower trachea and right main bronchus. On observation at the emergency room, he appeared with sudden cyanosis, so an emergency bronchoscopy was performed. A bronchoscopic finding revealed that the lower trachea and left main bronchus were obstructed by the foreign body (the object probably moved from right main bronchus). The foreign body was removed with a flexible bronchoscope.
The foreign object was nearly as large as the diameter of trachea.(Korean J Med 72:S225-S229, 2007)
