Whole body 131I scintigraphy plays an important role for managing well-differentiated thyroid cancer after total or near total thyroidectomy, along with the measurement of the serum thyroglobulin level. However, false positive uptake on 131I whole body scans can occur, although this is not common, without the presence of any residual thyroid tissue or metastatic lesions. The exact mechanism of iodide uptake in a non-malignant lesion is not clear, except for physiologic uptake in some tissues. We report here on two cases of false positive uptake after high dose radioiodine therapy in a pulmonary fungus ball and a mature ovarian dermoid cyst in two patients who were suffering with papillary thyroid cancer.(Korean J Med 71:S1030-S1034, 2006) |
