Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease is frequently associated with various extra-intestinal complications. Thromboembolic disease is one of its rare complications and has high morbidity and mortality. The reported incidence of thromboembolic disease in inflammatory bowel disease is 1~7%, but it is one of the main causes of death in ulcerative colitis. We report a rare case of ulcerative colitis complicated with sequential cerebral and pulmonary thromboembolism. A 30-year-old male with ulcerative colitis developed sudden hemiparesis and became stuporous and was diagnosed with cerebral sinus thrombosis on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). After treatment with heparin and warfarin, he recovered fully, without any neurologic sequelae. Six months later, he developed abrupt-onset severe dyspnea and chest pain. Chest dynamic computed tomography (CT) showed pulmonary thromboembolism. He was treated medically and again recovered completely.
