Abstract |
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections are common in immunocompromised patients, although they may occur occasionally in immunocompetent
patients. The majority of CMV infections in immunocompetent adults are asymptomatic or associated with mild
mononucleosis-like syndrome. CMV involvement of the colon is the most common site of infection in the gastrointestinal tract and
is more commonly a cause of massive gastrointestinal bleeding compared to CMV involvement of the upper gastrointestinal tract
and small intestine. However, although rarely, CMV esophagitis can be the source of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. We report an
immunocompetent patient with cytomegalovirus esophagitis and massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding who had undergone left
lobectomy and cholecystectomy for intrahepatic duct stones and gallstones. (Korean J Med 76:S40-S43, 2009) |
