Abstract
Mycoplasma pneumoniae mainly causes respiratory tract infections in persons 5-20 years of age. Cardiac complications occur in up to 5% of the cases, generally present with pneumonia, and are more common in adults than in children. Since most patients lack symptoms suggestive of cardiac involvement, it is important to identify cardiomegaly or electrocardiographic abnormalities for the diagnosis of cardiac complications. To date, there has been no report on cardiac complications of M. pneumoniae infections in adults in Korea, although there has been one case of pericarditis with a pericardial effusion caused by M. pneumoniae in a young child. We present a case of myocarditis and pneumonia caused by M. pneumoniae in a healthy adult. He was treated successfully with clarithromycin and prednisolone for four weeks.
