Abstract |
Autoimmune pancreatitis is a specific form of chronic pancreatitis in which the pancreatic fibrosis is reversible after steroid therapy. The identification of CD 4, CD 8 T-lymphocytes in the pancreatic tissue suggests that aberrant autoreactivity has a role in its pathogenesis. Here, we report a case of autoimmune pancreatitis that showed rapid clinical and radiological improvement but required a long-term oral hypoglycemic agent for diabetes control, despite early steroid treatment. With respect to the negative influence of steroids on glucose control, the administration of azathioprine as a corticosteroid-sparing agent can be considered as alternative maintenance therapy.
