Abstract |
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are characterized by the expression of c-kit (antigen CD117) and are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The small intestine is the second most frequent primary site for GISTs after the stomach, but the malignant potential of small bowel GISTs is higher than that for the stomach.
The clinical manifestations of small bowel GIST commonly include GI bleeding, abdominal pain or a palpable abdominal mass. These symptoms are non-specific. Accordingly, the diagnosis of small bowel GIST is often delayed and may be made only after complications have occurred. A spontaneous perforation of GIST in the small intestine with peritonitis is an extremely rare complication. We report an unusual case of a 62-year-old man found to have a spontaneously perforated GIST in the jejunum presenting as peritonitis.(Korean J Med 72:S164-S170, 2007)
