Abstract
Eosinophilic ascites is an uncommon malady. This can be noted in patients suffering with parasitic disease, a malignant condition, vasculitis and idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome or allergic disorders, including eosinophilic gastroenteritis. The latter is a rare disease of unknown etiology that's characterized by massive tissue infiltration of eosinophils in the tissue layers of any area of the gastrointestinal tract. The clinical manifestations are related to the level of the histologic infiltration in the wall, and also to the involved segment of the GI tract. Serosal eosinophilic infiltration may result in the development of eosionphilic ascites. A 37-year-old woman visited our hospital presenting with abdominal distension. She had peripheral eosinophilia and large amount of ascites that was mainly composed of eosinophils. Serosal lesion biopsy could not be performed. She was treated with corticosteroids and she responded rapidly with complete resolution of the massive ascites.(Korean J Med 72:S121-S125, 2007) Key Words : Eosinophilic gastroenteritis, Ascites
